“I think I can.”
“I think I can.”
“I think I can.”
Anyone here remember “The Little Engine That Could”?
The book tells the journey of a train that’s being pulled over a mountain. After its engine breaks down, larger engines are asked to help pull the train, but they end up refusing to do so. The work is then passed down to the little engine, at which point it is able to successfully get the train over the mountain while repeating the motto: “I think I can.”
That phrase has always stuck with me, and I’ve been constantly reminded of it throughout the last year.
For those of you that may have forgotten, that was a story about self-talk.
Think about it for a second.
That little engine repeated “I think I can” during what appeared to be one of the most difficult times in its entire life. It was being asked to do something that nobody – not even the engine himself – thought was possible.
It didn’t repeat “I think I can’t” or “Maybe tomorrow” or “I’m not sure”.
It insisted on focusing on what was possible.
What would happen if you did the same for yourself?
We act like our self-talk is not that big of a deal – but it is. Your words, whether spoken internally or externally, carry weight.
Heavy enough to swing you past your roadblocks, or heavy enough to stop you right in your tracks long before you even get the opportunity to find out how you would handle the roadblock.
So, I’ll ask you: What words will you tell yourself ?
Self-talk takes practice. You won’t always get it right but continue to make the effort.
Are you practicing an inner dialogue of support, confidence, self-love, and gratitude? Or are you practicing an inner dialogue of self-doubt, negativity, and derogatory language?
Take a moment and be honest with yourself.
The healthier version of you doesn’t come from another meal program or exercise routine. It comes from you.
Choose your words carefully.
