Injuries don’t just hurt physically. They can rock us emotionally, taking away the activities we love, isolating us from our training buddies, and doing some serious damage to our self image.
This is especially true as we get older and injuries seem to pop up with increasing frequency.
When I had my first injury, I felt I had been stripped of my identity.
I found it incredibly hard to admit I wasn’t coping mentally. I became an angry frustrated person – and I pushed away loved ones who just wanted to help.
Admitting I needed help and support was one of the most challenging things in the world for me as I didn’t want to be seen as weak, but it saved me.
Asking for help is a sign of strength not weakness. It was the best thing I could have done and helped me overcome the mental fallout of injury, regain my confidence and stop the emotional rollercoaster.
If you are struggling with an injury, don’t be scared to show vulnerability and ask for help. Your family and friends love helping you so stop stealing their joy.
